Abundant, densely tufted perennial on open, stony, N-facing slope. Soil dark and rich but somwwhat clayey. Spikelets with dull hues; light green, light purple (sides of glumes), and darker purple (tips of lemmas). Blades flat to involute, a flat glaucescent green above, a darker shining green beneath. Culms and sheaths generally bridgt green, shading to straw-color or red-purple basally. Large clumps to ca. 3.5 feet tall. Associates worthy of mention were Vaccinium ovatum (low growth), Ranunculus californicus, Lathyrus vestitus ssp. bolanderi, Dentaria californica, Polypodium californicum, Arabis blepharophylla, and undet., still-sterile grasses.
