Ash rich, sandy soil in shaded area in oak woodland burned in the last 6 months. Dominant associates include: Melica imperfecta, Madia gracilis, and Chaenactis glabriuscula. Other associates include: Silene laciniata and Calochortus albus.
Perennial herb with sticky, glandular hairs covering the stem, leaves, and calyx. Plant height: 0.6 - 1.0 m tall with branching stems. Opposite leaves are lanceolate to linear and 20 - 60 mm. Flower color: petals bright red and deeply cleft. Calyx tubular with toothed 20 mm. The 10 stames and 3 pistils are excerted.
