On serpentine gravelly slopes.
Plants 1-3.5(-4.5) dm long and 1-3 dm wide, loosely arranged on long, slender caudex branches arises from a stout woody taproot. The glabrous flowers initially a bright yellow but quickly becoming fused with red and eventually turning a deep, dark red to maroon. The achene is glabrous and contains a straight embryo.
