Mistletoe; A plant with no roots in the ground. It has aerial roots that penetrate the bark of the tree which is its host, growing into the sapwood which provides its nourishment. In the Pacific Northwest this is the oak tree. Mistletoe is valued, sought and harvested as Christmas greens. The waxlike berries are filled with an extremely sticky pulp. Birds are very fond of the fruit. By their help the seeds are widely scattered. The remains of the pulp quickly glues the discarded seeds to the limbs of the trees on which they are dropped and where they will germinate.
