Mixed forest with open habitat. Slope to 10 percent, soil clay loam; south to south-west orientation, in full sun. Associated plants: Quercus kelloggii, Collinsia heterophylla, Cryptantha sp., Rumex salicifolius.
Perennial herb to 1 m tall. Corolla and hood red to puple, anthers yellow; leaves and stems gray tomentose.
