In open CSS community on south facing 35 degree slope in full sun. Soils are loam to clay loam. Associated plants are Malosma laurina, Mimulus aurantiacus, Artemisia californica, Salvia apiana, Eriogonum fasciculatum.
Caespitose plant to 1 m tall. White to cream colored flowers with dark purple on adaxial side of outer tepals. Fruit;deep green maturing black.
