Growing in sandy loam soil. Slope 0-5 degrees, north-northeast aspect, exposed. In transitional area between cultivated shrubs and closed Salvia mellifera-mixed (Cercocarpus minutiflorus, Ceanothus verrucosus, Rhus integrifolia) scrub. Possibly cultivated.
Perennial shrub, ca. 6 ft tall. Perianth bluish purple.
