Habitat:
Open (due to logging) mixed conifer forest (Douglas-fir, Ponderosa pine, black oak; lesser amounts of incense cedar, canyon live oak). On S-facing cutbank in mostly bare, somewhat rocky reddish volcanic soil, with scattered bracken fern, Carex multicaulis, Mondardella sheltonii, Helianthella californica, Hazardia whitneyi, Viola purpurea, and Eriophyllum sp and Grindelia sp.
