Growing in a dry stony stream-way. In the belt of Larrea divaricata and Yucca brevifolia, associated with Hymenoclea salsola, Encelia frutescens, and Lepidospartum squamatum.
Shrubs 1 to 1.8 m. high, 4 m. across, with about 10 main stems each 2 cm. thick; often in broad thickets.
