In Sonoran-chaparral of Quercus agrifolia, Adenostoma, Salvia mellifera, Artemisia californica, etc. In sandstone wehre brush opens up, north slope. Plants also among standstone rocks.
Plant positively perennial, the base woody; about 200 to 500 stiff woody ascending stems about 0.6 to 1 m. long from the common base, making a rounded plant 1 to 3 m. across; sweetly resinous like Grindelia.
