[notes by H.M. Hall, 1925, regarding type specimen:] A single piece, 38 cm long, the heads spicate-racemose, on very short peduncles. Disk-corolla 4.8 mm; disk-akene 2 mm; pappus of 7 paleae, all awned, the longest 3.5 mm, others slightly shorter;...[continued in "Notes"]. Type at hb. DC. Isotype fragment from K (Hb. Benth.). Negative of isotype mounted on sheet. (Negative at Univ. of Cal.) ...inner bracts abruptly narrowed from the broad shoulders but not exactly truncate, dark, some gland-tipped, some only ciliate; ray-akenes sparsely pubescent, no pappus. Habit very strict, as in Hall's 9852 (-spicata) but with bracts below heads less crowded and not so white-ciliate; and inner bracts less actue; disk-fls much smaller in all parts; a coarser plant. Close to hispida but virgate, heads and fls shorter, rays flesh-color?.
