This specimen was picked from the luxuriant white growth about 2 feet high which circumvented a dead Coast Redwood with a single trunk about 6 ft. tall. Mr. "Butch" Zeni of nearby Zeni Ranch told me that this latter tree had been killed by a forest fire five or six years previously. He stated that prior to the fire the entire tree had possessed all-white foliage. The new growth stemming from the base of the dead trunk was all white in life; no individual green foliage was detected, or any shade of green in the white growth. Many normal redwoods were growing in close proximity to the aberrant individual. Mr. Zeni told me that another White Redwood, about 4 or 6 ft. tall, was to be found near a ranch house in the general area. It was his understanding that only about five specimens were in existence in California. He knew of none more than about 6 feet in height. He stated that attempts to grow transplanted portions of the trees had been unsuccessful, but that in water the foliage retained its white color for a considerable time. * Data from these fields are not available on the web.
