Serpentine soil. This tree is abundant here is this Redwood Grove, the branch was on the ground. It wasn't found with ferns, but in the summer there are many ferns here.

The lowest branches were 50 to 60 feet from the ground. This tree was about 250 feet high and had thick, fibrous, butressed bark. The trunk is about wo feet in diameter.
