Very steep north-facing slope; soft granite-derived soil, not very rocky but probably fairly shallow; filtered sun shrough mixed conifer forest (black oak, Ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir; with Toxicodendron diversilobum, Carex multicaulis, Symphoricarpos mollis, Melica harfordii. Plants loosely rhizomatous, looosely-rooted, often abundant on north-to northeast-facing slopes, often the main ground cover.
