Steep north-facing slope, soft granite-derived soil, not very rocky but probably fairly shallow; filtered sun through mixed conifer forest (black oak, Douglas-fir, incense cedar, Ponderosa pine); with Toicodendron diversilobum, Carex multicaulis, Pteridium aquilinum, Melica harfordii. Plants loosely rhizomatous, loosely-rooted, forming loose patches of week culms with flexible leaves, often abundant on north-to-northeast-facing slopes, often the main ground cover.
