North-facing slope, decomposed granite substrate; small openings in mixed conifer forest (dominated by Ponderosa pine, black oak); mixed with other grasses and forbs although none are dense. Plants in loose clumps but actually quite rhizomatously connected within the loose clumps - not a bunchgrass; inflorescences mostly disarticulated but some dry glumes and florets remain; stem leaves mostly still green, mostly at 90 deg. to culm.
