Desert scrub and barren gullies, with Penstemon incertus, Hymenoclea salsola, Ericameria cooperi, Encelia actoni, Stipa speciosa, etc.
Flowering
Rare shrub with lt. magenta flowers. Spines very rare (some pads with 4–7 spines just over 1 cm long). Plants possibly introgressed with var, treleasei, but that variety is unknown on this side of the Tehachapi Mountains.
