"Coll made on a small near island projecting out into the ocean where the species was in almost pure stands. these, so much smaller and compact in growth that they barely resemble the vigorous plants of what passes for the same pecies at Monterey or other areas S of San Francisco. plants either very rare or absent at this point on the real mainland; perhaps due to cattle grazing, although in 1927 I got it on the coastal bluffs here" CBW
