Sonoran desert; open, sparsely vegetated disturbed flats (creosote bush scrub) dominated by Prosopis glandulosa, Larrea tridentata, Atriplex. Dry, disturbed and apparently deep sand; some areas collecting water in winter.

Flowers magenta-pink, showy; common annual with ascending stems, leaves grey-green, soft; generally in colonies on open sand.
