Steep hills and canyons in poorly consolidated silty sediments; burned (c. 3 yrs. ago) chaparral with coastal sage and riparian patches, Yucca schidigera and Opuntia locally common. Very dry year (so far, driest since 1882) and few annuals present, except a thin cover of weedy grasses, many of those failing; shrubs mostly stressed.
Flowering & Fruiting
Scarce perennial with infl. to 2 m high, on ridgetop; fls. cream with purple edges to tepals. Plants solitary, not clustered, and widely scattered.
