South-facing mountainside; coarse granitic soil. Pinus jeffreyi forest with a dense shrub understory, mainly of Arctostaphylos pringlei. Deer Spring Creek is now dry, but surrounding forest is more shaded and mesic; open sites along creek covered by herbaceous vegetation.

Occasional annual in sandy places along ephemeral stream channel.
