Vernal pool surrounded by chaparral and blue oak woodland on what looks like volcanic, red substrate. Serpentine substrates are nearby, too. Soil is very hard and shallow.
Pool with Downingia, Plagiobothrys, Eryngium.
Plant begins prostrate, and becomes erect as pool dries.
