Rocky hills of basalt and clay. Chaparral on rocky slopes with Adenostoma, Quercus berb., Rhamnus ilic., Rhus laur., Arctostaphylos rainbo., Salvia mell., etc. Drainage with deeper soil with oak woodland dominated by Quercus engelm. and many native herbs in understory, including Chlorogalum, Holocarpha virg., Sanicula bipin., Lomatium dasy., Sisyrinchium, Sidalcea malv., Muilla marit., Calochortus, Allium hae., etc. Very dry year (+/- driest since 1882) and so inventory very incomplete. 4.6 acre parcel recently partially cleared and contoured for house construction; grader still on site--done with no permits, as is apparently becoming common because of lax enforcement by county.
Fairly common 1-1.5 m shrub with basal burl in chaparral, but perhaps 1/2 have been destroyed by grading--broken branches & uprooted burls present, some extant plants damaged. Lvs. green.
