Eriogonum clavatum is a strict vertic clay soil endemic. Note the: "Note: abundant on clay slopes on sides of drainage, forming almost pure stands." Occurrence of the species on "coarse granitic" would be a waif, originating from seed washed down into the drainage from the clay slopes.
