United States, California, Siskiyou, Near junction of W and E Fork of Seiad Creek, on ridge above company’s chromium mine
854 meters
2800ft.
Exposed ridge.
From west side of well marked mining company’s trail from near one of their - either center or corner - monuments. On the ridge just above said mining company’s chromium mine, not such a great ways above where the West Fork and East Fork of Seiad Creek join. See notes under Nos. 30 and 31. Steep slope. Growing on ridge - so exposed to south, west, and east. See footnote ‘B’ under Herbarium Specimen #30. Growing in rocky soil. The Seiad Grove must cover about a square section over a mile in either direction. I would say that this tree was probably growing not very far from an outcropping of Chromium ore, say running about 15-20 percent chromium. This might account, in a way, for the number and size of the cones. DBH of said tree probably around 16-18 inches. Estimated height at 50 ft. [Includes photos of tree]
