Locally uncommon shrub ca. 20 x 20 dm, densley branched but also browsed around the sides, growing out of Opuntia littoralis patch with Rhus integrifolia and Gnaphalium bicolor. Leaves both alternate and opposite on the same plant, tending to be opposite on lower end of branch and becoming alternate toward tip (on newer growth). Fruits with large horns; apical crest or horns vestigal.
